Uni Fees Hit Gap Years

The government have announced that any student who defers University entry in 2011 to take a gap year will have to pay the new higher tuition fees of up to £9000 when they start university in 2012. Last year more than 34,000 students applied for deferred entry places but numbers are forecast to plummet during the current application round following the revelation that candidates face no exemption from higher fees. Universities Minister David Willetts said: 'The new tuition charges we are proposing for the 2012/13 academic year will apply to all students starting university in that year, including those applying to go to university in 2011/12 who have deferred entry until 2012/13.'
