The Gap Year That Changed The World

7th October 2011

Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs, will be remembered as the man that revolutionised movies, music and personal computing, but it was a gap year trip to India that focused his mind.

After dropping out of college in the early 70's, Steve decided to take a gap year and headed off to India with a friend in search of spiritual enlightenment and to meet guru Neem Karoli Baba. Unfortunately the guru died before he got a chance to meet him, and his experiences in India shattered his hippy ideas. Speaking of his gap year, Steve said "It was one of the first times that I started to realise that maybe Thomas Edison did a lot more to improve the world than Karl Marx and Neem Karoli Baba put together".

On his return he got a job working at Atari, where he met Steve Wozniak, who he co-founded Apple with, and the pair then went on to change the world.

As Barak Obama said "He transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world."
