Student raises £4,660 to fund gap year dream
8 Jul 2010
April Goodwin, a teenager from Aboyne, near Aberdeen, hopes to spend her gap year teaching orphans in Cambodia and has gone to commendable lengths to fund the trip, a Deeside Today article reveals. Due to set off in less than eight weeks' time, April has been raising money for the adventure by running, cycling, swimming and speed walking. She set herself the target of 730km - the distance from North East to South West Cambodia - and having now completed this first part of the challenge, she said: "I am very glad to have done it and feel it has definitely helped me to prepare physically and mentally for the massive challenge ahead."
Now just £100 short of her £4,660 target, she has been learning the native language Khmer and practising first aid as she prepares for her gap year adventure. The student will spend the gap year teaching English in Phnom Penh (Cambodia's capital) and she will get involved in providing medical aid and encouraging full-time education to children.
