Recession Fuels Career Breaks

New research from Santander suggests that 1.2 million UK employees have taken time off work since the beginning of the recession. The recession appears to have fueld an increase in demand for career break sabbaticals. The poll discovered that a total of four million people took time out from their career or education during the past decade, up from 270,000 during the 1970s. The rise is attributed to a highly competitive job market and a lack of places at university. Almost half used the time to travel, while 28 per cent used it as a chance to work abroad, while 20 per cent simply opted for a rest.
