Since declaring independence from the Soviet Union in 1990 and indirectly causing the collapse of that country, most of Lithuania’s efforts have been turned to putting its economy in order and cleaning up the last vestiges of the Soviet Union’s influence. As in the other Baltic countries, if you can speak Russian, keep it to yourself. Recovery from the 1999 economic crisis has been well-managed enough to allow Lithuania into the EU.

In the Middle Ages, this was a powerful country, but was unified with Poland in 1385, then in 1795 it went to Russia, then Germany finally being annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940. It is the biggest of the Baltic states. The geography is mostly flat. Under Soviet rule the economy was mainly geared to providing the USSR with agricultural products and light manufacturing. Much diversification has taken place but the country is still quite poor.

You need have no great worries about the language; it is one of the Indo-European group. It was also named as a ‘critical’ language by the US Department of Education in 1985 – there are only some 3.5m speakers world wide.
