Hostelworld reports massive increase in gap year travel to South America
28 Jun 2010
South America has emerged as the region with the greatest increase in visitors following a review of Hostelworld.com's annual bookings. Aisling White, a Hostelworld.com representative, reported that South America "is fast becoming a very popular destination" and he attributed this to the increase in safety in countries such as Columbia and the improving transport links and facilities for travellers. The destination with the biggest increase in visitors was the Bolivian Salt Flats, with an enormous 316% rise in visitors to Uyuni, a nearby town. The figures also show that Columbia, Brazil and Uruguay are continuing to gain popularity with young travellers.
South East Asia also emerged as an increasingly popular gap year destination, with Thailand, Taiwan and Cambodia showing particular rises in young travellers.
