FCO Issues Gap Year Advice For Australia

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised gap year students to take precautions to avoid losing their passport in Australia. The advice was issued in response to a reported
2,446 cases of lost or missing passports by Brits in Australia last year. The recently published FCO report on British Behaviour Abroad said that the high frequency of passport loss is connected with the fact that UK driving licences are not accepted as identification in Australian bars. The FCO recommended that gap year travellers obtain a proof of age card from the Roads & Traffic Authority on arrival in Australia. This can then be used instead of a passport as an alternative form of ID in bars.
