Can gap years bridge the funding gap?

19 Jul 2010

A recent report by the Association of Investment Companies (AIC) found that 41% of students opting to take a gap year do so in order to raise funds for their higher education. This indicates that a large number of students consider their gap year to be an important (or perhaps even essential) opportunity to prepare themselves for university. With the vast range of options on offer, gap year students are finding they are able to use their time away from full-time education to prepare themselves for their academic and professional careers in whichever way they deem necessary. This may mean gaining life experience by taking advantage of the worldwide gap adventure opportunities on offer, or earning some money by finding a work placement (or, of course, a combination of the two). The latter seems especially significant as the AIC's report also found that a third of gap year students are trying to ease the financial strain that studying puts on their families. By taking a gap year, they are giving themselves time to find the funds necessary to get them through their higher education.
