A recent ICM poll found that 34% of those surveyed would consider taking a gap year to volunteer in their own communities, according to a new survey. Researchers found 34% of people might think about doing unpaid work near their homes, while a quarter (26%) said they may consider going abroad to volunteer in a poor community. The poll questioned 2,005 people across different ages and backgrounds and found taking a year out is not just a pursuit for younger generations. The survey was commissioned by organisers of Your Big Year, a competition to promote global citizenship and enterprise which has attracted 44,489 registrations from 168 countries with the chance of travelling the world for a year, working with poor communities and meeting world leaders.
